An Adams Spectral Sequence Primer

چکیده

My aim with these notes is to quickly get the student started with the Adams spectral sequence. To see its power requires that some concrete calculations be done. However, the algebra required can quickly become overwhelming if one starts with the generalized Adams spectral sequence. The classical Adams spectral sequence, in contrast, can be quickly set up and used to do some calculations which would be quite difficult by any other technique. Further, the classical Adams spectral sequence is still a useful calculational and theoretical tool, and is an excellent introduction to the general case. Throughout, I have tried to motivate the ideas with historical remarks, heuristic explanations, and analogy. For prerequisites, the reader should be willing to work in some category of spectra, though little more than the notion of stabilizing the homotopy types of spaces will really be needed. In particular, no familiarity with the details of any particular category of spectra will be assumed. A passing acquaintance with calculations with the Steenrod algebra will be helpful, though the details will be provided where they are needed, so a determined novice has a good chance of success.

A new family in the stable homotopy groups of spheres

Let $p$ be a prime number greater than three. In this paper, we prove the existence of a new family of homotopy elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres $pi_{ast}(S)$ which is represented by $h_nh_mtilde{beta}_{s+2}in {rm Ext}_A^{s+4, q[p^n+p^m+(s+2)p+(s+1)]+s}(mathbb{Z}_p,mathbb{Z}_p)$ up to nonzero scalar in the Adams spectral sequence, where $ngeq m+2>5$, $0leq sExt}_A^{s+2,q[(s+2)p...

Some products involving the fourth Greek letter family element δ̃ s in the Adams spectral sequence ∗

Let p be an odd prime and A be the mod p Steenrod algebra. For computing the stable homotopy groups of spheres with the classical Adams spectral sequence, we must compute the E2 -term of the Adams spectral sequence, Ext A ( p, p) . In this paper we prove that in the cohomology of A , the product k0hnδ̃s+4 ∈ Ext s+7,t(s,n)+s A ( p, p) , is nontrivial for n ≥ 5, and trivial for n = 3, 4, where δ̃s+...

The Motivic Adams Spectral Sequence

We present some data on the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. Our results are based on computer calculations and a motivic version of the May spectral sequence. We discuss features of the associated Adams spectral sequence, and use these tools to give new proofs of some results in classical algebraic topology. We also consider a m...

Notes on the Adams Spectral Sequence

The Adams spectral sequence is a powerful tool for computing homotopy groups of a spectrum, somehow taken with respect to a certain cohomology theory. In particular, it allows one to compute the homotopy groups of certain spaces, given sufficient input data. In this paper, we give a detailed development of the Adams spectral sequence, following Adams 1974 and Ravenel 2015. After a proof of conv...
